Giant Beanie for Brain Cancer takes over McDonald Jones Stadium!

Rugby league fans from across NSW are being encouraged to ‘get their beanies on’ during the NRL’s Round 19 ‘Beanie for Brain Cancer Round’ to support the former Newcastle Knight Mark Hughes’ annual fundraiser.
McDonald Jones Stadium will don its own three-metre high beanie and be renamed ‘Beanie for Brain Cancer Stadium’ while all other NRL venues will sell beanies at merchandise outlets from 25 July – 28 July.
Venues NSW CEO Paul Doorn said: “We are proud to support the Mark Hughes Foundation by welcoming Beanie for Brain Cancer Stadium to our network of venues as part of this Round. I’d like to publicly thank McDonald Jones Homes for giving up their naming rights to our stadium for this great cause.”
The Mark Hughes Foundation was formed by former Knights player Mark Hughes and his family after Mark was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2013.
“I would like to thank McDonald Jones Stadium for their amazing support again in 2019,” Mark Hughes said.
“For Bill McDonald and Venues NSW to come together to support our cause and give up the naming rights to McDonald Jones Stadium is a huge gesture and one that we feel truly honoured by. We can’t wait to see a packed house at the Knights game with the loyal fans wearing their beanies.
McDonald Jones Stadium is used as a base location to store and dispatch the thousands of beanies every year, free of charge.
Knights CEO Philip Gardner said: “It was a terrific initiative to have the giant beanie sit atop the stadium last year and we are thrilled to have it back on game day for our match against the Wests Tigers.”
ANZ Stadium and Bankwest Stadium will also be getting behind the cause during round 19 games. Bankwest Stadium will be lit up in Mark Hughes Foundation colours and teams will be running on through Beanie for Brain Cancer banners at ANZ Stadium. Both venues will be selling beanies at all games and promoting the cause on their big screens.
