Rugby Union fans from across the Hunter are the big winners with the NSW Waratahs coming back to McDonald Jones Stadium for a one-off clash against super rugby powerhouse the Auckland Blues on Saturday, 8 February 2020.
Venues NSW have combined with Newcastle City Council and the NSW Waratahs to bring the team back to McDonald Jones Stadium following their history making first ever Super Rugby match in Newcastle against the Sunwolves of Japan in March this year.
The much-anticipated clash against the Auckland Blues has the potential to be a financial boon for the wider Hunter region with direct flights from Auckland to Newcastle providing easy access to the Hunter for New Zealand rugby fans.
Venues NSW CEO Paul Doorn said having the NSW Waratahs back at McDonald Jones Stadium is a great result for Newcastle rugby fans and for the Hunter region’s visitor economy.
“Venues NSW and Newcastle City Council have worked closely together to bring the Waratahs and Auckland Blues back to McDonald Jones Stadium to ensure regional fans get to see some of the world’s best rugby talent in their own backyard.
“It will be great to see rugby fans not only travel from across New South Wales but from across the Tasman to pack McDonald Jones Stadium for what will be a great rugby match.”
The Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Councillor Nuatali Nelmes said: “Today’s announcement is further indication of the confidence that major sporting organisations, such as SANZAR, are showing in Newcastle as a location of choice to stage their domestic and international sporting fixtures.
"Our ability to continually attract some of the country's best live sporting and entertainment events shows just how committed we are to making our city the best it can possibly be.
"We look forward to working with the NSW Waratahs, Venues NSW and McDonald Jones Stadium to make this match one of the standout features of the City’s 2020 sporting calendar.”
New South Wales Rugby Union (NSWRU) General Manager of Rugby, Tim Rapp said the Hunter was an important region for rugby in New South Wales.
“Newcastle and the Hunter are a huge participation area for our sport,” Rapp said.
“There’s a proud rugby history here in Newcastle and for NSW Rugby to bring another game to the area is a great initiative.
“With the support of Andrew Hore [CEO] and our Board, we took the step of bringing the game to McDonald Jones Stadium last season and the community were fantastic with their support – it was an easy decision to come back in 2020.
“The facilities for both players and fans are some of the best in the country and bringing an opponent like the Blues here is an exciting prospect.”
