FOX Australian Supercross Champions Returns
Media Release
The FOX Australian Supercross Championship will return to Newcastle bigger and better in 2023 with the marquee event, the AUSX Triple Crown, kicking off the series at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday, November 11, much to the delight of supercross fans.
Last year almost 20,0000 fans packed McDonald Jones Stadium to see American Justin Brayton take the SX1 crown, proving the popularity of supercross in the Hunter region and growing interest in the Australian domestic series.
The highly anticipated return is a great result for locals as well as the visitor economy of the Hunter region, with the event taking place in partnership with the NSW Government through Destination NSW & Venues NSW, supported by City of Newcastle.
The AUSX Triple Crown will again be a unique event for Newcastle with a bespoke race format known as the ‘Championship within the Championship’. The format delivers a hotly contested race for both riders & teams that will draw fans to Newcastle for the first race of season.
Venues NSW & McDonald Jones Stadium, CEO Kerrie Mather, is excited for the return of this action-packed event and the inaugural 85cc Cup.
“Last year’s Australian Supercross Championship was a huge success with almost 20,000 people coming from all over the region to McDonald Jones Stadium for one of the events of the year,” Mather said.
Newcastle Councillor Peta Winney-Baartz believes the return of the Australian Supercross Championship to Newcastle was testament to the community's support for hosting major events of this type in the city.
"Newcastle has become an events powerhouse, attracting nationally and internationally renowned acts and events that entertain audiences across the city, increase tourism and deliver major economic benefits to the local community,” Cr Winney-Baartz said.
"The Newcastle Triple Crown event proved hugely popular when it was staged at McDonald Jones Stadium last year, allowing almost 20,000 sports fans from across the region and beyond to experience the country's best supercross riders in Newcastle while also injecting more than $3 million into the local economy.
"City of Newcastle is proud to have worked with Venues NSW through our strategic partnership to bring this high-octane event back to our city and we expect another huge turnout for the biggest Australian Supercross event of the year.”
With the addition of the new 85cc format and an expanded fan experience offering in 2023, the FOX Australian Supercross Championship is expected to again draw large crowds to Newcastle from all corners of the country, come November.
